Auxiliary verb sum,esse,fui

Two forms of the auxiliary verb sum,esse,fui which show two present stems

The auxiliary verb sum,esse,fui is irregular and has two present stems, visible from the first two forms, sum and esse. Shorter stem s- is always followed by the vowel -u-, but the longer stem es- comes without the vowel before the consonants s or t.

The Present Tense of the Auxiliary Verb

Both stems appear in the present tense
Stem s-, followed by -u-, can be found in the forms sum – I am, sumus – we are and sunt – they are. The other forms come from the longer stem es-, with no vowel between the stem and the ending: es – you (one person) are, est – he, she, it is, estis – you (more than one person) are

Interrogative Form

Interrogative form consists of the particle –ne, which is written together with the form of the verb.

Negative form

The negative particle non is added in front of the verb.

Non sumus certae. – We are not sure.

The Imperative Mode of the Auxiliary Verb

The simple form of the imperative mode has only the second person of singular and plural. The singular form is equal to the longer stem, while the plural form has the ending -te.

The Infinitive

The second form of the verb sum,esse,fui is its infinitive (esse – to be)

Capra monet vaccam. The goat is worning the cow that the machine they see is dangerous.
Be careful! The machine is dangerous.
Capra monet vaccas. A goat is warning two cows that the two machines they see are dangerous.
Be careful! The machines are dangerous.
